Meet The Team
The EMTHERA Faculty is composed of more than 100 scientists from Goethe University Frankfurt (GU), Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), from several Max Planck Institutes, the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology (Fraunhofer-ITMP), the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS), the Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology (HI-TRON), the Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB), the Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research (LIR) and from Translational Oncology at University Medical Center Mainz gGmbH (TRON).
We are proud to be highly interdisciplinary within the EMTHERA faculty, covering a broad expertise from computational to natural sciences, clinical medicine and the financial sector. Within the EMTHERA faculty, the Junior Academy clusters all early career researchers and offers many activities, e.g. a lectures series on AI in Life Sciences. If your are based in the Rhine-Main region, interested in our research and wishing to join, please contact the project office.
The Steering Committee is composed of eight scientists from Frankfurt and Mainz who together have taken the lead in establishing the network. A Scientific Advisory Board has been set up with internationally renowned experts from the fields. An overview of the governance structure can be found below.
Steering committee
Ivan Đikić, spokesperson
Cell & Molecular Biology, GU Frankfurt
„Enabled by novel tools and technologies, EMTHERA will tackle some of the most challenging biomedical questions. At the same time, it provides the unique opportunity to educate the next generation of truly interdisciplinary scientists.“
Tobias Bopp, spokesperson
Immunology, JGU Mainz
„For me, EMTHERA provides the unique opportunity to work together with excellent scientists in an interdisciplinary fashion on tomorrow's therapies for diseases that are currently incurable.“
Christian Münch
Protein Quality Control & Quantitative Proteomics, GU Frankfurt
„Driven by cutting-edge technologies and a fantastic team of scientists at the forefront of their respective fields, EMTHERA allows us to tackle some of the most challenging questions in the field of infection, immunology and inflammation.“
Özlem Türeci, spokesperson
Immunotherapy, JGU Mainz
„We will multiply the power of science by working together, and contribute to solving most pressing biomedical challenges. The success of mRNA-based COVID vaccines proves how platform technologies can be smartly employed to achieve the impossible.“
Sandra Ciesek
Virology, GU Frankfurt
„The COVID pandemic has revealed our vulnerability towards emerging pathogens and underlines the severe impact of immune and inflammatory responses on outcome of diseases. EMTHERA helps us to better understand these interfaces.“
Katja Luck
Integrative Systems Biology, IMB Mainz
„EMTHERA brings together the right mix of scientists to identify new biological targets in currently incurable infectious or inflammatory diseases and to develop novel technologies for the design and delivery of biologics against these targets thereby making breakthrough discoveries.“
Maike Windbergs, spokesperson
Pharmaceutical Technology, GU Frankfurt
„EMTHERA builds a perfect bridge between basic and translational sciences. A better understanding of molecular mechanisms will lead to discovery of novel targets and unique therapeutic strategies, thereby speeding up translation."
Wolfram Ruf
Thrombosis & Hemostasis, IMB & JGU Mainz
„EMTHERA provides tremendous opportunities to leverage excellent expertise and productive synergies in the development of innovative therapeutics addressing the most challenging clinical problems in chronic inflammatory diseases.“
