Ubiqutination and cell-autonomous immunity


Ubiquitination of proteins modulates cellular functions by regulating protein stability, localization, binding affinities and activity. In this review EMTHERA spokespersons Tobias Bopp and Ivan Đikić, together with a shared postdoctoral fellow Joao Mello-Vieira, summarize the role of ubiquitination in sensing of microbial pathogens and the regulation of adequate immune responses to eliminate the invader. In contrast several pathogenic mechanisms have evolved that exploit the ubiquitination system to prevent immunological clearance by the host.
